They say you can’t go back to the same river twice, because neither the river nor the person is the same. Returning to Samal Island after twenty years felt exactly like that. The last time I stepped onto these shores, I was seeing the world through the eyes of a child. This time, I returned as a digital artist and photographer, carrying a lifetime of color theory, composition, and a deep appreciation for “the quiet moments” in my pocket.
The “Main Character” Energy by the Shore
There is a specific kind of magic that happens when the sea breeze hits just right. I couldn’t help but lean into a little “Jisoo of Jeju Island” moment—but with a distinct Samal Island twist.
As a creative, I’m always thinking about the “vibe” of a frame. The way the light interacts with the water and the soft, neutral palette of the shoreline creates a natural studio. It’s easy to feel like the main character of a K-Drama when the Philippine tropics provide such a stunning backdrop. Whether it was posing by the waves or simply feeling the wind, it was a reminder that sometimes, we need to step out from behind the workstation and into the light.
A Fine Arts Perspective: The Pocket Beach
One of the highlights of this trip was discovering a quiet “pocket beach.” For a photographer, this was a dream. Imagine tall, swaying trees providing a natural frame, clear turquoise water, and that iconic powdery white sand.
Drawing from my Fine Arts photography classes, I found myself focusing on the “joy of peace.” In my professional work, I’m often building worlds from scratch in animation or digital illustration. But here, the world was already built perfectly. I focused on:
- Visual Storytelling: Capturing the way the shadows of the leaves danced on the sand.
- Natural Textures: The contrast between the rough bark of the trees and the glass-like surface of the ocean.
- The “Slow” Composition: Taking the time to wait for the “golden hour” to hit the horizon, turning every selfie and seascape into a soft, glowing memory.
Playfulness in the Sand
Of course, an artist’s journey isn’t all serious composition and lighting checks. There’s a raw, bubbly joy in the simple things. I spent time just walking, playing around, and—of course—writing my name in the sand. It’s a classic beach trope, but singing along to the breeze and leaving a temporary mark on the shore felt like a necessary “reset” for my creative soul.
Why We Need the Silence
In the hustle of running an animation studio and teaching, silence is a rare commodity. On this island, time moves a little slower. I realized that “beauty” isn’t just something we create; it’s something we notice.
Looking at the shots I took, I see more than just a vacation. I see a creative journey. I see the girl who left Davao years ago coming back to find that the peace she remembered is still there—just waiting to be captured in a new light.
